Conclusion

In this book, I have traced the people and texts in the Han dynasty that scholars often label as “Confucian,” “Daoist,” “Old Script,” “New Script,” and so forth, and I have tried to understand who they were, what they did, and why they did so. What insights and general patterns can we gain from the literati world of this roughly three hundred years of imperial China? In the following, I will zoom out from the specific pictures and look at the panorama. I will start with how the Han literati connected with each other and sustained their communities. Then I turn to the intellectual discourses among the communities, particularly concerning the Great Peace and Heaven, in order to see the patterns of intellectual innovations in Han China. Finally, I will examine the long-term impact and legacy of Han classicism.
